Outer Banks-Fall 2012

For this year's Fall Outer Banks trip, we took Andy's mom and dad with us.  They had not been in a long time and wanted to go.  We took a couple days off work, and headed down for a four day weekend.  We had a really great time, and Aidan really enjoyed it too.  Got an early start on Thursday morning, and went straight to the 4x4 beaches when we got there.  It was kind of breezy, but still really nice.

Aidan playing in the edge of the water.  The waves were pretty rough, so he didn't get much water time.

This guy was kite-boarding right where we were at.  This looks really cool to me, and I say I would love to do it one day, but probably not!  Knowing how to swim would probably be an important first step!

The wind definitely allowed for Aidan and Andy to fly the kite.  The excitement wore off pretty quick though!

One of the best things about going out on the 4x4 beaches is looking for the wild horses.  We have actually only been lucky enough to stumble across them in this area one time, but today was our really lucky day.  We saw several and were able to get pretty close, but still in the car.  Supposed to stay at least 50 feet away.  They are absolutely beautiful, and it is truly amazing to see them.  Driving out on the beach and then seeing these horses was probably the highlight of the whole trip!

Even though there are no real roads out there and this community is so remote, they have a fire station.  I guess the remote-ness of it means they need one more than most.  Really cool!  This is what a vacation is all about.  Would love to stop for groceries on the way in, go out here, and not leave for a week!  :)

We stopped by the Currituck Lighthouse on the way to check into the hotel.  I really like this one because it is so different.

Aidan thought it was cool to get to "climb" this tree and sit on it.  He was a little nervous at first because he felt like he was going to fall off, but he got comfortable really quick.  He started looking for another tree to climb.  Great!

There were chickens there this time.  Never seen them there before.  Aidan, of course, got pleasure out of trying to follow them around.  He did good because he didn't chase them, but he did stay right behind them!

After Currituck we headed to the hotel to get checked in.  We always stay at the same place, but decided to try something different since Andy's mom and dad were with us and just wanted a change.  We ended up getting suites and really enjoyed that extra space.  Oceanfront room so we had a great view.  I could have sat on that balcony all day everyday!  Give me a seat and the ocean, and I am good to go.  I think Andy is the same way, but he would probably appreciate a fishing pole to go with it.  Aidan would just need a shovel and a bucket!  Went and grabbed some supper, and then came back to the hotel to rest.

We got an early start on Friday because we wanted to go to Bodie, Hatteras and Ocracoke.  It turned out to be a rainy, messy and long day, but we still had a good time.  Decided I haven't lost anything in Ocracoke, and can do without going back.  Very long trip!

They have received additional funding, so they have started working on Bodie again.  Hopefully, they will finish soon.  It really needs a good paint job, so hopefully, that will be included.  We always enjoy walking down the boardwalk at Bodie and looking at the marsh.  Skeeters were out and about, but fortunately weren't too bad.

Stopped at Hatteras next but didn't climb.  Maybe when Aidan gets a little older we will go back up there.

People were feeding the seagulls off the back of the ferry.  There were tons of them!  We were on the covered side of the ferry going over to Ocracoke, so we were able to stay outside of the car and get a better view of everything.  Aidan opted to stay in the car with Andy's mom.  Thought that really odd!  Really expected him to want to be out and about!

By the time we got over to Ocracoke, it was a wet and soggy mess, so we had to take this picture from the car.  Didn't even get to go down to it.

After finally making it back to the other end of the coast, we stopped by the pier to show Andy's mom and dad and to stretch our legs after riding for so long.  It is an awesome pier, and it is really cool to walk to the end.

Aidan and I both love turtles, so here he is "swimming" with the turtle.  :)
We pretty much always go play putt-putt when we go to the beach, so Aidan was itching to go.  We grabbed sandwiches for supper and then took him to Professor Hacker's to play.  I must say I didn't take a single picture.  It is the first time I have ever gone to play putt-putt with Aidan, and didn't even take the camera with me!!!!

Saturday was absolutely gorgeous, so we spent some time out on the beach.

Later that afternoon we took Aidan fishing on the little bridge.  Saw some really cool needle fish and crabs, of course.  A crab was the only thing Aidan caught, but he was happy with his catch!

That night we went out for supper to one of our favorites and had excellent food.  Tale of the Whale is always so good in both food and service.  By far the best meal we had while we were down there.  Early bird special gets us 20% off, so you don't even spend as much as you do at places with so-so food.

We hung out on the balcony before bed playing with glow sticks.  We had a good time goofing off!

Sunday morning's sunrise.  We got up every morning to see it, and it was beautiful everyday.  Aidan got up with us on Saturday morning, and that was his first sunrise.  I think he enjoyed it even though he was a little groggy-eyed!

The hotel breakfast room was extremely crowded, so Sunday morning we went out for breakfast to a pancake house.  We had seen it for years, but had never been, but had also seen that it was always crowded.  Now we know why.  It was really good!  A little pricey for breakfast, but the food was great.  Aidan really liked it, and we got there early enough to beat the crowd.

We always go by the aquarium on the way home, so we kept that tradition.  Highlight is always the otters!  :)  We actually got to touch a real otter hide and some rubber molds made to feel like their feet.  Learned that otters do not make good pets even though they are so cute.  Apparently at about 6 months old, they start marking their territory!  :)

Even though it looks like Aidan is trying to climb in with the gators, he really wasn't.  :)  He likes watching gator boys on TV, so I guess he wanted to get up close and personal with them.

Sea turtles are probably our second favorite.  Aidan and I both share that love!

He really liked this orange fish near the bottom of the pic too.

After the aquarium, we stopped by Big Al's for lunch and then headed home.  I have gotten to where I can't stay awake in the car for anything, so it was a pretty fast trip for me and Aidan!  :)  We had a great time and can't wait to do it again!
